Well, I just got home from babysitting for about 30 minutes. Not much of a babysitting job you say, there's a reason for that.
I spent the night at the Etzler's house on Sunday night because we're both out of school. I went to Walmart with them (a nice, not pushy one), we went to lunch but Vickie Etzler needed a babysitter for tonight. Even though I sort-of had plans I cancelled them to babysit for 3-4 hours!! I was so excited. It was my first job away from our house and it was 3-4 hours and I wanted money. Before Doug and Vickie left, Reese said he didn't feel well. Vickie (being the gracious, thoughtful person that she is) put a bucket by Reese and said to call if something happened. Doug thought that she was being paranoid but she saved my life. They weren't gone for 20 minutes and Reese reaches for the bucket. Addie and I were eating so I got up and grabbed the phone. While I was back in the master bedroom calling, Addie was yelling at Reese to "keep the bucket close to him." Vickie was upset because it was her only chance to go shopping with Doug for the kids. I said sorry a few time and she reassured me that it wasn't my fault.
We had a few conversations (all of them involving Reese) making sure that everything was okay including Addie and I. I sent Reese to the bathroom just so 1) I didn't have to be around it and 2) because Vickie said so. As soon as he was let out of the bathroom by me, I gave him another bucket as instructed to do so and he went right back into the bathroom because he didn't feel good again. Even though I didn't do anything I got $5! I told Vickie that I didn't do anything but she gave it to me anyway.
The ironic things about this are: Vickie was taking precautionary steps in case he did get sick and Doug was saying she didn't have to and that Reese wouldn't get sick. I've been hoping that my first official job wouldn't involve a sick child. At least now I know what to do. Like I said in the title though.... I am NOT doing that again.
That was a short-lived career.
ReplyDeleteHighlights from mine have included vomit, diarrhea, naked babies running from bathtubs, cut fingers, sibling fights, and scrubbing carpets. I've also babysat entire GROUPS of children (not always voluntarily; thank you, church people), children with ADHD, and children for entire weekends. It will all make you a better person, Bekah.
Give it another try, but start small. Start for 1 hour or less with 1 child at a time.
babysitting! don't give up on it!!! sometimes it's very very boring and sometimes it's tons of fun. i remember one family, they had three little girls, and NO MATTER WHAT I SAID TO THEM they giggled! i felt so awesome being that hilarious! then there was another kid that decided to bring real food into her play kitchen and made a huuuuuuge mess with coffee grounds in the pretend coffee maker...the worst part of that was i'd made my little sister come over to play with the kid (they were kind of friends) and caryn didnt even try to stop her!
ReplyDeletebabysitting has its ups and downs, but its worth it...don't give up!
